Grand Geyser

Grand Geyser

This is the one you want to see at Yellowstone if you only see one (although why you'd do that is beyond me). Of course it's less predictable but the show it puts on it phenominal.

Grand has a +/- two hour policy on when it's gonna go. But when it goes, it goes big (up to 200') and it pulses over the course of a 9-12 minute eruption. Huge volumes of bright blue boiling water are pushed out in a scene that defies description.

We got down to Grand around 8:20pm on Sunday night to find out it had not erupted yet and would probably go in the next 40 minutes. We had 9:15 dinner reservations at the Inn (yeah - we were roughin' it) and we, ummmm, needed a shower - but we stayed. And we were rewarded - with about 50 other stalwart souls. The show was not only amazing, but the sun broke through the clouds mid-eruption and just lit the steam up.

When it was done - there was applause. For boiling water. And it was deserved. It's the one to see.

Room With a View

Room With a View

If you ever get a chance to stay at Many Glacier be sure to ask for a lakeside room on the second floor. The old lodge rooms at any of the national parks are old and a little "quirky", but I love staying at them.

So if you go to Yellowstone, try to stay at the Old Faithful Inn in a high range room with an upper basin view, and stay at Many Glacier in a lakeside and second story room. If you want to make sure this happens, make the reservation in May of the current year for the next year.
